It’s a Confidence Gap, Not a Knowledge One

Financial confidence goes beyond simply feeling good about your finances. It means having the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions and feeling comfortable enough to actually use them. So… what does financial confidence look like? It can be as simple as being able to join a conversation about the markets without immediately wanting to change the subject.

When you’re first introduced to investing, you’re suddenly hearing about what a TFSA is, asset allocation, and these weird names like XEQT and QQQ. At some point, you start wondering whether people are discussing investments or speaking a different language.

It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed. Finance often feels like a club where everyone gets the memo except you. But the truth is, everyone starts somewhere. What’s interesting is that while finance can feel intimidating, women are actually amazing investors. Research shows women earn roughly 1–2% higher annual returns than men (Willson 2025). Studies show women tend to be patient investors. They trade less, stick to their plans, and focus on the long term. Women are also more likely to diversify their investments and think carefully about risk before jumping in.

Despite these strong results, there’s still a confidence gap. Women underestimate their financial knowledge by 23.5%, even though the data shows they’re making smart financial decisions (Willson 2025). Nearly 90% of Canadian women will manage finances independently at some point in their lives, yet many still feel uncomfortable discussing anything related to money (Battams & Mathieu 2024).

Building financial confidence starts with being willing to learn. It means reading about why the markets moved today, understanding how interest rates affect your savings and investments, or finally figuring out what an ETF is after nodding along every time someone mentions one. Over time, those unfamiliar terms become familiar, and financial conversations become much less intimidating.

Most importantly, financial confidence isn’t about knowing everything. Nobody does. It’s about being comfortable enough to ask questions, sharing your thoughts, and making decisions without second-guessing yourself every step of the way.

At FuturFund, we’re building a community where women can openly talk about money, investing, and everything in between, without feeling like they need to be experts first. We have each other’s backs and recognize that everyone starts somewhere. Our goal is simple: to help young women become curious, ask questions, take chances, and build confidence to navigate the financial world!
